BACKGROUND & TRAINING EFFECT

The Wrap & Grip 360 is part of The GSI Performance Technical Training Range and can be used in isolation or as part of the full system of products. This piece of equipment has been specifically designed to isolate accurate body height and reinforce key technical points within the tackle technique such as tracking and laser focus, body shape, stance and balance in and out of the tackle action, and isolating specific wrap and arm movements within the action. As a player, using this piece of equipment helps  train accurate body height, arm wrap and grip, reaction speed, timing and balance. The Wrap & Grip 360 can be used to develop a single player contact depending on what defensive tackle techniques are trained.

KEY COACHING POINTS

Coaches should require players to approach the wheel from different angles and speeds – do not always give the player a straight approach to the wheel (i.e. hit ground and up, hit ground and roll then back to feet, get the player to evade you then make the hit… never make it easy!).

Coaches can practice timing within the track and connection by giving the player visual cues on when to connect with the wheel (e.g. when grip bars are in a square formation then connect or when grip bars are in a diamond formation).

Coaches can work on a straight hit, or fatigue the player first, then carry out the tackle so that the hit puts the player’s skills under pressure.

Players should keep eyes on the target all the way through the initial hit, employ a strong arm clamp and sound initial shoulder contact, grip work then lock in, and always finish the tackle off to the ground and don’t slip off.

As a coach, look for speed of movement of the player, look to keep hips low and square always in a loaded stance within the track.

Coaches can dictate the speed of the wheel as they create the momentum within the drill.

Watch players’ approach to the wheel, make sure the player’s feet are not too close together but are at the correct width to bring about outstanding stability in supporting their own body weight throughout entry into the tackle.

Coaches can call different commands relating to the player gripping the grip bars of the wheel. The width, height and weight of the wheel and the grip bar placement has been purposely designed to make the practice difficult and game-like – this ensures that when transitioning to “live” practice, the movements are easier.

Make sure the players work on different grip techniques on the wheel and always finish in a strong end position.
